Even if it is not feasible to undertake a complete redesign of your garden or public space, it is possible to introduce elements which will help to encourage wildlife and increase the sustainability.
Ponds can be contemporary and link with the surrounding architecture, and in some cases can be designed as part of a rain garden - using water runoff from surrounding roofs. Where space is at a premium, green roofs and living walls are alternatives to a conventional garden. Interesting and aesthetic habitats and niches can be incorporated into existing walls and these may be made with found objects or with waste materials from other parts of the site. Children love to create these mini habitats.
